Thomas's obituary
Tom (also fondly known as "TomKat" and "Unk") was a man who enjoyed many pleasures, from spending time with loved ones to singing and playing handbells in the choir at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. A lifelong resident of the Baltimore area, he loved a good game, especially of pool or cribbage, and a good drink, especially coffee with Irish cream, and kept his mind sharp with daily crossword puzzles.
Always a curious person who keenly documented his thoughts and observations, Tom authored a book, Bawlmer, Merlyn: Home of the Hons, as well as many poems, which he had at the ready for family occasions. He graduated from the University of Baltimore and Southern High School and held varied jobs throughout his life, including in business management at Johns Hopkins Hospital and RK&K engineering. A proud veteran, Tom served in the U.S. Army Reserves in the 1960s and spent many happy hours with friends at the American Legion.
Tom passed away peacefully on September 27 after battling cancer and COPD in his later years. He is survived by his former wife Sylvia, their children Ann and Tom (Laurie), and many adoring nieces, nephews, and cousins. The beloved son of Thomas K. R. Hyland, Sr., and Ethel Hyland, who both predeceased him, Tom was also preceded in death by his sisters Adele and Rose (James).
Per Tom's wishes, a wake will be held in celebration of his life at a later date.
In remembrance of Tom, donations may be made in his honor to the Wounded Warrior Project and the American Legion.
