Thomas's obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Hay on July 7, 2024. Born on August 24, 1936, Thomas lived a fulfilling and vibrant life, marked by laughter, love, and a passion for the things he adored.
Thomas is survived by his daughter, Valerie McCalvin; his son-in-law, Chris McCalvin; his grandchildren, Marisa Oliver, and Macy Irwin; his brother, John Hay; and his sister-in-law, June Hay. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Charlotte Hay.
Thomas and Charlotte united in marriage in the year 1965, and were blessed with their only child Valerie on January 18, 1968. In 1972, Thomas publicly declared his faith through Baptism. He was most recently a attendee at Rochester Hills Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Known for his jovial and giving nature, Thomas was a self-proclaimed 'jokester'. He loved listening to Elvis and other oldies music with a Pepsi in hand, watching the Detroit Lions—his favorite sports team, and engaging in games of cards with his wife Charlotte and their friends. Thomas was enthusiastic collector of old engines, Thomas found joy in restoring antique engines, gas pumps, and so forth — some of his greatest accomplishments.
When he wasn't tinkering in his workshop, Thomas could either be found swinging his golf clubs, working in his large yard or relaxing in his favorite vacation spots in Florida with his wife Charlotte. Thomas was passionate about spending time with his grand children. When he wasn’t filling his home with joy and laughter, Papa could be found with Charlotte caring and or babysitting Marisa and Macy throughout the years.
After his wife Charlotte died in 2022, his daughter Valerie became his full time caregiver for all of Thomas's needs as his mental health deteriorated slowly due to dementia. Thomas had a special bond with his daughter Valerie, he loved her dearly.
Family was very important to Thomas, and he was always the first to lend a helping hand whenever it was needed. Although his loss is deeply felt, his life and legacy continue to inspire those fortunate to have known him. May the memories of his laughter and generosity live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
