Thom's obituary

Thomas “Thom” Elwood Hunter, Jr. was 81 when he passed away in Houston, Texas on October 21, 2024. Thom had been battling health challenges, without complaint, for a number of months when he passed.

Thom was born in Gastonia, North Carolina and raised in Bessemer City, North Carolina by his parents, Geneva and Elwood along with his sister Nancy. After a stint in the Army and introducing his sister to her future husband Jay Jorns, he moved to Houston to join his sister and start a new career. In the early 1980's he met his wife, Claudia Kaufman Hunter, in Houston and raised his two daughters in Missouri City, Texas where he lived for the remainder of his life. He is survived by his two daughters, Susan Hunter Morales (spouse Michael Morales, children Maxwell, Hunter, Grace) and Nancy Hunter Sharp (spouse William Sharp, children Claudia Rae and Liam).

Thom was an experienced "tinkerer" building his own race cars as a young man, then model airplanes and even his own Cessna airplane. He played golf as much as he could and would spend many of his afternoons later in life at Greatwood Golf Club with friends. He was the author of three fiction books and a masterful teller of jokes. His friends (lifelong and recent), neighbors, family members, and even doctors and nurses shared many many laughs with him over the years.

Thom’s Celebration of Life will be at The Lone Star Flight Museum on Friday, November 22, at 1:30 p.m. The burial at the National Cemetary in Houston will be at a later date in 2025.
