Tom was diagnosed with Early-Onset Alzheimer's disease in 2013, but he suffered for at least 10 years before it was diagnosed. Early- (or Younger) Onset Alzheimer's means the person is diagnosed with the disease before the age of 65. Presently there is no cure for Alzheimer's and the person's brain withers away until he or she can't walk, can't talk, can't understand, and eventually can't breathe or swallow, unless they are mercifully taken by a secondary infection such as pneumonia along the way. It is the most heartbreaking illness I have witnessed.
We need to find a cure so we can stop this disease from destroying its victims and their families who bear witness to their loved ones suffering until death in a years and years long dying process.
