Theolia's obituary
Theolia Idealia Sawyer Carter, aged 81, passed away on July 19, 2024, in Virginia Beach, VA. Born on April 26, 1943, in Miami, FL, Theolia was a beacon of authenticity and innovation, embracing her true self long before the mainstream celebrated such ideals.
Theolia grew up in Coconut Grove and attended George Washington Carver School, later graduating from Northwestern High School. She moved to New York, NY, to care for her Aunt Clotell and was warmly welcomed by her Uncle Arnold and Aunt Myrtle. In New York, Theolia was introduced to new ways of thinking and being.
Theolia was a trailblazer in many aspects of her life. She adopted organic eating in 1968, crafted her own African attire, and was a self-taught herbalist. She was a part of the Black Arts Movement and a member of The Theater of Afro Arts in Miami, FL, where she wrote and performed. She was also one of the first residents in the “new section,” of 141st Lane in Richmond Heights, Miami, FL. Her spiritual journey was diverse and profound, exploring and embracing the teachings of Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, and African Traditional and Indigenous Systems, with a special focus on Metaphysics.
Professionally, Theolia dedicated over 30 years to the Dade County Traffic Division, where she was a beloved employee. Her commitment to her work was paralleled by her dedication to various spiritual communities, including The Theosophical Society, The Edgar Cayce Foundation, The Aquarian Foundation, and the Thai Temple in Miami, FL.
Theolia’s hobbies included writing, performing, reading, and engaging in deep discussions about politics and metaphysics. She was also a supportive figure who loved visiting relatives and nurturing connections.
She is survived by her elder sister Connie Cambridge (Donald Cambridge-deceased), younger sister Valdave Sawyer, younger brother David Sawyer, II, daughters Tené A. Carter, Kasana J. Carter, son Jamal H. Carter, bonus daughter Jha-kari Selver Daniels (Joel Daniels), granddaughter Brynn Booker, and a vibrant and loving multigenerational family, friends and co-workers. Theolia was preceded in death by her parents, Velderia and David Sawyer.
A ceremony celebrating Theolia’s life will be held at Burial by the Sea, 301 Seabreeze Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33316. Her legacy of wisdom, love, and pioneering spirit will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her.
