Thelma's obituary
Thelma Tanya Bartholomew, born Thelma Bernadita Subeldia, passed away peacefully at her home in Douglas, Alaska, on Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 74.
Tanya was born on August 1, 1950, in Manila. At the age of 12, she emigrated with her family to Juneau, Alaska—a move that marked the beginning of a remarkable life shaped by resilience, curiosity, and faith. She became a U.S. citizen at 16 and graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1967.
In 1976, Tanya married Captain Curtis Bartholomew. Together they traveled the world during his various service assignments. Fluent in multiple languages and originally aspiring to a career in foreign diplomacy, Tanya embraced the global lifestyle with enthusiasm and grace.
Tanya had a deep love for travel and world cuisine. Her culinary talents were legendary among those who knew her—she fearlessly recreated international dishes at home and developed her own unique cooking style. Whether preparing crepes or seafood or even escargot, she believed everything was better with a glass of champagne.
After her marriage ended in 1988, Tanya pursued an eclectic and fulfilling path that reflected her many interests. She returned to school to earn her Master’s degree and held diverse roles throughout her career. She worked for the State of Alaska Department of Labor and the Alaska Marine Highway System; she also owned a Christian bookstore in Juneau and later worked as both a Realtor and Mental Health Counselor.
A woman of unwavering faith, Tanya was a devoted Christian whose spiritual strength guided her through life’s challenges. Her enduring belief in Jesus Christ gave her courage during more than ten years as a cancer survivor, through the pain of a fractured back, and while undergoing dialysis for renal failure. Her positivity remained steadfast—a testament to the depth of her faith.
Tanya is lovingly remembered by her sisters Norma Renton (Steve) Rice and Nelda (Tom) Stewart; nieces Lisa McIlwaine and Shannon Harris; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, and close friends who were touched by her warmth and spirit.
She was preceded in death by her parents Filomeo and Genovena “Eving” Subeldia and sister Edie Corbitt.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Juneau Cancer Connection in honor of Tanya’s courageous journey.
May Tanya’s memory bring comfort to all who knew her and continue to inspire lives rooted in faith, resilience, and love.
