Background
In addition to his Parkinson’s diagnosis, Whitey was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia ("LBD") in June 2023. Frequently, the diagnosis of one will coincide with the other. For those who don't know, LBD is the most rare and severe form of dementia, with a life expectancy of 5-7 years.
LBD is characterized by protein deposits that are toxic to brain neurons and affect the brain's ability to properly use glucose. This results in symptoms that are very similar to Parkinson’s disease. There currently is no cure nor are there specific medications to slow disease progression. However, there are active clinical trials for drugs to potentially help that will hopefully come to market in the next couple of years.
It is often difficult for clinicians to differentiate between Parkinson’s disease and LBD, as their symptoms are very similar. The scans used for LBD diagnosis are new, expensive, and not covered by insurance. Whitey was fortunate enough to be enrolled in a study at The Ohio State University where he was able to receive these scans, which gave him and his family clarity as to what they were dealing with. This study informed them of a mild Alzheimer's diagnosis as well.
Without the funds to support research, this aggressive disease will continue to devastate people and their families. Whitey's family would love your support in funding research for a cure to destroy Lewy Body Dementia forever. Contribute to Lewy Body Dementia Association
