Terrance's obituary
Terrance Roger Cummins—affectionately known as Terry, Unce, or Papa, to family and friends—passed away peacefully on December 23, 2025, in Bakersfield, California, due to complications related to dementia. Born on September 11, 1939, in Durango, Colorado, Terry lived a full, meaningful life marked by intelligence, love, curiosity, and just enough mischief to keep things interesting.
Raised in Durango, Terry showed an early zest for learning and a healthy curiosity about the world. Education became both his calling and his passion. He devoted much of his life to the noble profession of all things education, shaping the minds (and occasionally the patience) of countless students. He believed deeply in the power of learning and took quiet pride in helping others discover what they were capable of becoming.
After a rewarding career in education, Terry took on a new chapter as a State Farm Insurance Agent. True to form, he approached this role with integrity, dedication, and a sincere desire to help people. He earned the trust of his community not through flash, but through consistency, honesty, and showing up when it mattered.
Terry knew how to work hard, but he also knew how to enjoy life. He loved to travel—especially alongside his beloved wife, Leila Ann Cummins—and together they built a lifetime of memories exploring new places and cultures. At home, he could often be found enjoying a good Irish tune with a glass of whisky in hand, a nod to both his heritage and his appreciation for the finer things. He was not perfect, would be the first to admit it, and wore his imperfections with charm and humor.
Above all else, Terry was a family man. He was a devoted husband to Leila Ann; a loving father to Terry Lee Cummins and his wife Lori, Shawn Kelly Cummins, and Sherri Michelle Cummins; and a proud, deeply cherished grandfather and great-grandfather. His grandchildren—Shawn (Amanda), Brianna (Ted), Michaelene (Mikey), Katie Rose (Euriel), Conor (Katye), Terrence, Gracie, Ashleigh, and Marilei—and great-grandchildren, Charlei, Stevie, Banksy, Dani, Lilei, Teddy, Kennedy, Emmie, JJ, Emory, Jameson, and Ruth, were among his greatest joys. He loved them fiercely, teased them lovingly, and quietly modeled what it meant to live with integrity, fun, and love.
Terrance Roger Cummins leaves behind a legacy of devotion—to family, friends, education, and community. Those who knew him will remember his kindness, his wit, his laugh, and the way he made people feel seen. Though he has left this earthly realm, his spirit lives on in stories told, lessons remembered, and the love he so generously gave. His light continues to shine—sometimes gently, sometimes mischievously—guiding all who were lucky enough to call him theirs.
