Teresa's obituary
She was born in September, 1947, in Springfield, Missouri; she had one older brother, Jimmy. The family made their home in several different places during her childhood, including Hawaii, Colorado, and several cities along the California coast. This may have sparked something in Teresa, as she continued this nomadic lifestyle for the next couple decades of her life.
In 1970, Teresa traveled to Canada where she met her husband, Raymond; they married in British Columbia, in 1971. They first settled on an isolated cedar shake claim in Narrows Inlet, at the time 20 miles by boat from the nearest town, where they lived happily for 3 years with their goats and chickens, and lots of books. Together, they taught themselves the necessary skills to be self-sufficient for months at a time. As their family grew, they decided they wanted to live in places more easily accessible; this included Inuvik, located on the Mackenzie Delta in the Arctic Circle.
Terrie and Ray continued to travel Northwest Canada together, raising children in a variety of beautiful and remote locations; in their 22 years together they had 6 children: Joshua, Samuel, Caleb, Rachel, Deborah, and Danielle.
During Teresa’s first battle with cancer, they moved to Edmonton, one of the larger cities in the area (by Canadian standards). When she recovered, she decided to attend the University of Alberta. Although she entered with the intention of finishing her Bachelor’s degree, she was a motivated and talented student and she continued on her academic journey, earning Master’s degree in 1994, and her PhD in Sociology in 1996. After graduating she returned to the US to be closer to her mother, moving to Cleveland, Ohio; she worked as an Assistant Professor, Associate Dean, and finally as a Vice Provost at Cleveland State University before her retirement in 2016.
Teresa was loving, adventurous, open-minded, and independent. She was a devoted daughter and mother, and a much loved grandmother. She was always available to advise on cooking techniques, or to help break down particularly abstract statistical concepts.
Among her many interests were baking, history, detective novels, classical music, science fiction movies, and zombie movies. She spent some of the summer of 2020 re-watching all of George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead series, interspersed with episodes of the Great British Baking Show.
