Tammy's obituary

Tammy Elaine Schmahl passed away peacefully on January 18th, 2023 surrounded by the love of her family. She was 60 years old.

She was born on May 25th, 1962 at Doctors Hospital in Tucker, Georgia. As a child her father affectionately nicknamed her “Hambone” and the nickname stuck with her family for the rest of her life. She married Jay Schmahl in 1982 and had two beautiful children, Jonathon Kyle and Jessica. Her life took her out of Georgia to Colorado, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Tennessee, but eventually her heart brought her back to Georgia. She was always a Georgia Peach through and through.

Tammy was an amazing wife, daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother, or Grammy (Gigi) as she was so affectionately called by her twin grandchildren, Jax and Andi. She took pride in her job as a homemaker. Her family was her whole world and everyone knew it!

She lived to serve and she did it so incredibly well. She had a passion for cooking and it was through feeding her family and friends that her love shined so brightly. No one could make better food from scratch than Tammy and she never measured or followed a recipe. Her food came straight from the heart.

Tammy always loved a good laugh and a good scare! She was forever the prankster and loved to laugh at the expense of others. When family and friends would visit, they had to peek around every corner just to make sure she wasn’t going to jump out! Her silliness and big sense of humor will be sorely missed. But she instilled that love of pranks and laughter in her children and they will happily keep that tradition going!

She was one of the most loving, genuine people anyone has ever had the privilege of knowing. Anyone who met her felt comfortable immediately, like they were just part of the family. She was an adopted mom to so many! And if you needed her, she’d drop anything to be there. She was incredibly selfless, always putting other’s needs above her own. She gave everything she could give to the ones she loved. She always gave with her whole heart. To know her truly was to love her.

Tammy loved the Lord with all her heart, his light shined through her and made the world a brighter place! She rededicated her life to the Lord in 1998 and remained dedicated Him and to the church for the rest of her life. Honesty, integrity, and kindness were of the utmost importance to her. You could always count on her blunt honesty, yet it was always delivered with love. She was the epitome of unconditional love. Anyone who has been in Tammy’s life will tell you, they are better people for having known and loved this woman. Her family is so blessed to have had her as a wife, mother, and grandmother and they will carry her memory, laughter and love with them for the rest of their lives.

Mama, you are so immensely loved. You will forever be missed and always remembered.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Jay Schmahl, her children Jessica Schmahl and her partner Alli Shifflett, Jonathon Kyle Schmahl and his wife Stephanie Schmahl, her grandchildren Jackson and Andrianna, her sisters, Robin Fuller, Cindy Middlebrooks, and Tracy Brooks, her brothers, Marty Ledford, Patrick Ledford, and Mike Ledford, and her father, George. She was preceded in death by her mother, Edna Ledford.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 26th, 2023 from 3-7pm and Friday 12-2pm at Bill Head Funeral Home (Lilburn/Tucker). Funeral service to be held in the funeral home chapel at 2pm. Interment will follow at Melwood Cemetery.

For those who would like to honor Tammy’s memory and support her family during this difficult time, there is a GoFundMe and fundraiser set up in her name. In lieu of flowers, please consider donation to the family fund or to a charity of your choice in her name.
