Background
Most everyone that has seen mom in the last years of her life realized that her mental health was not great. Despite the onset of her advanced dementia, physically, she was in good health up until a few months ago. I don't think anyone is truly prepared for the passing of their mother, and I certainly was not prepared. My wife and I took mom to the hospital about a week before Christmas, where she was treated for a simple infection with antibiotics, and the plan then was to release her a few days later. Instead of her discharge, her dementia accelerated rapidly, began with aspirational pneumonia, and before I could process that, I was making advanced directive decisions. Each day seemed to present me with impossible decisions I needed to make on her behalf, that she and I never discussed beforehand. Over a period of about 45 days, this small infection eventually ended with her passing away last week. I still don't understand how everything happened so fast.
As her only child, 100% of her end of life expenses are my responsibility, and I learned very quickly that cemeteries, funeral costs, a gravestone, and cremation are costly but necessary services. After countless phone calls to various service providers, the final number is $6000. This amount covers the funeral, the tombstone, and the cremation that is required for the interment, so that she can be placed to rest with her mother and brother.
I realize that traditionally, flowers have been sent as a show of support for families grieving the loss of a loved one. Instead of showing your support with flowers that will last only days, please make a donation instead that will make her memory last forever. Contribute
