Sze Len's obituary

Sze Len (Seline) Hui

December 6, 1942 - March 5, 2024

With great sadness we announce the passing of Sze Len (Seline) Hui otherwise known as “Sze” at the age of 81 in Richmond, BC.

She was the beloved daughter of Yap King Yoong (father) and Chong Foong Moy (mother); dear sister to Sze Khiun (sister), Sze Ho (sister), Sze Keng (sister), Sze Kiong & Yoon Sim (brother, sister in law), Sze Foong & Linda (brother, sister in law) , Sze Pin & Daphne (brother, sister in law), Sze Liam & Rosalind (brother, sister in law); and caring aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Sze was born on December 6, 1942 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She graduated from Bukit Bintang Girls School (BBGS) where she met some of her lifelong mates.

She left Malaysia in 1961 and attended nursing school in the United Kingdom (UK). She was an adventurous and independent person, traveling across the UK and Europe while making new friends along the way. She even ended up in Morocco after hitchhiking with two of her friends from nursing school!  She was a great documentarian as she marked the year and locations for all her pictures she took of her travels, family and friends, and special events.

She immigrated to Canada in 1968. There she met Shiu Fun (Fred) Hui at a party in Toronto after he tried selling her a Filter Queen vacuum cleaner. She did not buy the Filter Queen, however, she was charmed by Fred’s easy going manner and audacity. They eventually married in Reno, Nevada!

She had Wylie in 1972 and people constantly told her she had the cutest baby ever. Wylie is less cute these days, however, he inherited her nature. In 1974, Fred, Sze, and Wylie all moved to Vancouver and lived near Commercial Drive. In 1975, Sonya was born and the family of four settled in Richmond, BC.

Sze worked as a nurse at North York General, Vancouver General Hospital, and Children’s Hospital. After deciding to change careers, she earned her real estate license and became an agent in early 1990’s.

She had a high threshold for pain and conquered breast cancer. She even fractured her ankle pushing her granddaughter Meira up the street in Seattle. Afterwards, she took a couple of Advils and drove back to Richmond. That said, she did not love hospital stays and even during her last few days in the hospice, she wanted to get up, move around, and show us she could go home. She was certainly a stubborn person!

As everyone knows, Sze was kind and caring, however, she was also blunt and pragmatic. She loved her family and friends. She would always call to check in with her kids or friends. She loved her mahjong, celebrity gossip, and americanos!

Sze Len (Seline) Hui is survived by Shiu Fun (Fred) Hui (husband); Wylie, Carrie and Cecily (son, daughter in law, granddaughter); Sonya, Timothy, Pax and Meira (daughter, son in law, grandchildren).

We would like to thank the doctors, nurses, staff and chaplains at Richmond Hospital and the Salvation Army Rotary Hospice. We appreciated the care for our mom, which helped our family navigate through her comfort care process.

Mama, we miss you so much. We are happy you are finally at home and at peace. You will be forever etched in our hearts and we will see you in our dreams.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 19 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Ocean View Funeral Home & Burial Park on 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, BC.

A small memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 20 at 10:30 am at Ocean View Funeral & Burial Park as well.
