Sylvia's obituary
Sylvia Jean Bazzi, a native of Detroit, Michigan, passed away on October 2, 2023, at the age of 81, in Slidell, Louisiana. She was born on March 28, 1942, to her loving parents, the late Margaret Elias Najjar and Victor Najjar, in Detroit. Sylvia is the beloved mother of Jeffrey Kabazzi (Kathryn Kabazzi); proud grandmother of Viola Kabazzi; and cherished sister of James Najjar, Victoria Najjar, John Najjar, Robert Najjar, and Donald Najjar. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends, all of whom she loved dearly.
Sylvia graduated from Cody High School with the Class of 1960, where she excelled on the field hockey team. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Wayne State University in 1964. Sylvia touched the lives of many students in her teaching career at Redford High School in Detroit, where she shared her immense knowledge of American History, World History, and US Government. Sylvia also performed professionally as a belly dancer. After retiring from traditional teaching, she continued sharing her love and talent for dancing at a community college in the Detroit area by teaching courses on belly dancing. She also taught English to Japanese businessmen and businesswomen who relocated to Detroit for the auto industry and spoke very limited English.
Sylvia’s Christian faith was the center of her life and she enjoyed studying the Bible. She was generous to those in need and donated to St. Jude Children’s Hospital monthly despite having limited resources. Sylvia had a talent for sewing and loved watching comedies. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Saturday, October 21, 2023 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Glen Eden Memorial Park located at 35667 8 Mile Road in Livonia, Michigan. Sylvia will be laid to rest in Glen Eden Memorial Park Cemetery following services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Sylvia’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital are preferred.
