Sydney's obituary
Sydney Ann Floyd of Murfreesboro, TN passed away on November 4, 2023 after a long and hard fought battle with younger onset dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease. She was only 62 years old.
Lovingly named after her late aunt, Sydney was born on June 22, 1961 in Lancaster, California to Dixie (Dorsey) Gates and Robert ‘Bob’ Gates. Being the daughter of a military employee, they moved around the Southern California area throughout her childhood until settling in Ridgecrest, CA where Sydney attended Burroughs high school (go Burros!)
After high school, Sydney started her decades long career in jewelry when she got a job at Ship’s Bell jewelry store. On a night out with her best friend, Lisa, she unknowingly turned down what would eventually be the love of her life, Greg Floyd, for a dance. In fact, she didn’t just turn him down, she didn’t even look his direction when she said no! Luckily, fate had other plans, and they were brought back together, this time on the roads of Ridgecrest where Greg saw her driving her prized white Mustang. Shortly after, he saw her out again, and made sure this time he got that dance. Armed with the knowledge of what her car looked like, on his way to his car in the parking lot, he jotted down a little note asking for a date, left it on her windshield, and the rest, as they say, is history!
Sydney and Greg were married April 28, 1985 in Barstow, CA, where they also bought their first home together. Three and a half years later, they welcomed their first and only child, Lacey. Sydney continued to be fortunate enough to work in a field she was passionate about, jewelry. Her customers, along with anyone who knew her, adored her light-hearted, kind nature, and often went by her jewelry counter just to say hello to her!
When she wasn’t at work, Sydney enjoyed traveling with her husband, Greg, and on occasions, a selection of friends from their tight knit group, to numerous tropical locations, both domestic and abroad! She also loved to visit her family that resides in Montana, and meet up with them for reunions and reminiscent fun in Bullfrog Marina on Lake Powell, UT.
Sydney was the picture of a loving, supportive wife and mother. She thrived as a mom to Lacey, always building her up and making sure she knew she could do anything she put her mind to. One of her favorite pastimes was watching Greg and Lacey perform, whether it was in sports, singing, or acting, she was Lacey and Greg’s biggest cheerleader, literally, yelling and doing her signature loud whistle at every performance or game. Those supportive and loving tendencies were carried into grandparenthood when Lacey and her husband Steven made her a “Gigi" in 2019, and again in 2022. Even well into her health decline when her vocabulary was starting to fade, Sydney would always say to her grandkids “you can do it!” Whatever Sydney did, she did it with her fun-loving nature and laid back attitude that everyone grew to know and love.
Sydney is survived by her husband, Gregory Floyd, her daughter Lacey (Floyd) Welton, son in law Steven Welton, granddaughter Emerson and grandson Wyatt. Parents, Bob and Dixie Gates, her brother Tracy Gates, sister in law Karie Webb, niece Averie and nephew Tegan, as well as countless other family and friends that will miss her dearly. A celebration of life service has been planned for Saturday, November 18 at the home of Greg Floyd, 179 Little Turtle Way, Murfreesboro, TN from 2-4 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association tribute page in Sydney’s memory. http://act.alz.org/goto/Sydne…
