Sybil's obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sybil Matthews McElveen, on October 31, 2025. Sybil lived in Staunton, VA (formerly from Olanta, SC.) Born on August 1, 1945, to the late William and Mabel Matthews, Sybil will be remembered as a woman of strength, warmth, and unwavering love for her family and friends.

Sybil is predeceased by her cherished husband, Pete McElveen, her brother, Hoyt Matthews, and her sister, Joyce Tedder. Her nephew, Chuck Tedder, also precedes her in death. In spite of these profound losses, Sybil's spirit and zest for life remained unbroken throughout her years.

She is survived by her beloved sons, Brad (Jennifer) of Scranton, SC, and Barry (Melissa) of Staunton,  VA; Sybil had a very special relationship with her granddaughter, Madison; brother Gene Matthews (Judy). grandchildren,  Mason,  Trevor, and Shawn McElveen;  great granddaughter, Yazmine McElveen. 

Also mourning her loss is her niece, Sheryl Swisher, who held a special bond with Sybil. The impact of Sybil's loss extends far beyond her immediate family, touching those who were fortunate enough to know her.

Sybil's life was characterized by resilience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to her family. Her values live on through her loved ones and the many lives she touched. As we grieve her passing, we also celebrate Sybil's remarkable life and the numerous ways she enriched our world. Her memory will be forever ingrained in our hearts.

Family and friends in SC will be received at the home of Brad and Jennifer McElveen on Saturday, November 8th between 2pm and 7pm. (2684 Tower Circle, Scranton, SC 29591)

To respect the wishes of Sybil, a private family ceremony will be held at a later date.
