In Memoriam: Suzanne Sawtelle
Suzanne Sawtelle, currently a resident of Cranston, RI, and formerly of East Greenwich, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at the age of 73. Suzanne was a beloved daughter and sister, deeply loved by her family. She is survived by her sisters Kathleen Sawtelle, Sandra Sawtelle Hodge, and Linda Sawtelle, along with her sisters-in-law Gail Sawtelle and Geraldine Sawtelle, and brothers-in-law Robert Hodge and Peter DeRestie. Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents, Courtland and Mary Bates Sawtelle, her twin brother, Michael Sawtelle, and her brother, Anthony Sawtelle.
After graduating from East Greenwich High School in 1969, Suzi went on to become a Nurse at Rhode Island Hospital for over 50 years. She was diligent and dedicated to her profession, always learning in her field. She got her LVN in 1971 at Rhode Island Junior College school of Nursing and went on to get her BS in Nursing (RN) at Salve Regina College in 1981 and finally received a Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Rhode Island in 1991.
Early in her career she went to Texas to practice nursing and studied and worked with the famous heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey. She was trained in Trauma Nursing in 1982 and for many years she volunteered as an American Heart Association Cardiac Life Support Instructor, training many of RI's emergency medical personnel in CPR and Trauma procedures. In 1988 she received the AHA's Rhode Island Nurse of the Year award.
After many years as an ICU nurse, Suzanne moved into Nursing Informatics and helped develop Rhode Island Hospital 's computer systems and training materials for all hospital staff. She touched the lives of so many people with her unwavering dedication to her career.
Throughout her life, Suzanne was a wonderful sister and twin known for her warmth and generosity of spirt. Her Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday August 24, 2024, at 1pm at Westminster Unitarian Church, 119 Kenyon Avenue, East Greenwich, RI.
