SUSAN TING YEH

Susan Ting Yeh (Chao Min Ting), aged 83, died Monday July 17, 2023 at Boulder Community Hospital following an acute aortic dissection.

Susan was born in Chongqing on March 29, 1940, to Ding Guan Hai, a civil engineering professor, and Wang Tsun Ying, a psychology professor and politician. They moved to Nanjing after the end of the second Sino-Japanese War and then to Taiwan in 1949. After graduating from Taipei First Girls’ High School, she received a scholarship for her undergraduate education at Winthrop College in South Carolina, where she majored in Math, graduating in 1963. She then received an M.S. in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma, writing a thesis on the rainfall measuring capability of radar.  Afterwards, she worked at the Illinois State Water Survey in Urbana, Illinois.

In 1967 she married Hsiang Tao Yeh in Charlottesville, Virginia. Subsequently she took time off from her career to raise her daughters in Buffalo, New York; Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Naperville, Illinois; and then Manalapan, New Jersey. In New Jersey, she retrained in computer programming and worked at AT&T/Bell Labs on network switches for small to mid-sized towns. In 2017, she and Hsiang Tao relocated to Boulder, Colorado to be closer to their grandchildren.

Susan loved spicy food and was always experimenting with and perfecting new recipes. She also enjoyed traveling, particularly for reunions with her high school classmates. In her later years she became very interested in studying ancient Chinese history and also spent time tending to her flowers and plants both in the garden and inside the house and helping her grandchildren with their Chinese homework. Her sharp memory and keen mind stayed with her to the end.

Susan is survived by her husband, Hsiang Tao Yeh, her daughters Frances S. Yeh and Emily T. Yeh, and her grandchildren Osel M. Yeh and Seldron M. Yeh of Boulder CO, as well as her two older brothers Samuel C. C. Ting and John Ting.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday August 19, 2023 at 11am at the Darrell Howe Mortuary in Lafayette.
