Susan's obituary
Susan Stein Schreiberg, 77, passed away peacefully at her home in Danville, CA on January 12, 2023.
Susan was born on October 19, 1945 to Sol Stein and Elaine Drazen in New Haven, CT. She was a cheerful, talkative child, despite a difficult upbringing. She made friends easily, enjoyed time with extended family, and formed a lifelong friendship with her cousin Diane. After graduating from Hillhouse High, she attended Endicott, George Washington, and the University of Toronto before obtaining a PhD in sunbathing at beaches around the world. Susan was a cheerful, adventurous, ingenue who led with her emotions and embraced the material pleasures of life. She was passionate about the arts, musical theater, jazz, and fashion. She taught pre-school before her son Seth was born when she dedicated her life to being a supportive and loving mother. Susan excelled at making friends, engaging strangers with kindness and wit, and creating safe spaces for everyone. In her spare time she volunteered on various Democratic political campaigns and the American Jewish Committee. Susan was devoted to bearded collies and poodles, who she fostered, rescued, and found homes for through an extended network around the country and Canada. After a decade in Naples, Florida, Susan moved to California in 2019 where she was closer to family. The family is grateful to the staff of Sunrise of Oakland Hills for helping Susan rehabilitate and keeping her safe during the worst of the pandemic. In her final years, Susan was incredibly proud to have "Camp Susan" where she could read in the sun while her grandkids played in the pool. We are thankful and blessed that Ellie and her family were able to lovingly care for Susan. Even as Susan's health declined, paramedics, nurses and doctors commented on her spirit, resilience, and kindness. We will miss her greatly. Susan was predeceased by her parents and brother Mark. She is survived by her son Seth, his wife Sarah, grandchildren Naomi, Calla and Penelope, her ex-husband Shel, nephew Matt, and cousin and best friend Diane. There will be a celebration of her life at her home February 5, 2023, including a memorial over Zoom. For more details please contact Seth at sschreiberg@gmail.com. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the Bearded Collie Club of America or the Levine School of Music.
