Susan's obituary

Susan J. Rohrbach passed away on Jan. 23, 2024 in Tucson, AZ. Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1939, she was the second of four siblings (Barbara, Susan, Philip, Michael). She is survived by her husband Michael, daughter Marisa (Larry), son Paul (Kristeen), adored grandsons Jason and Evan, brother Philip (Janice), and six nephews and a niece, who all held a special place in her heart. She grew up above her family’s pharmacy and luncheonette in North Philadelphia - her father, Jules Janson, was the pharmacist and her mother, Mary (Driban) Janson, worked the lunch counter. Susan loved spending summers “down the shore” at her family’s bungalow in Ocean Gate, NJ (she recalled with amazement that she, her siblings, and cousins spent all day at the beach and boardwalk with virtually no supervision!). She received both her undergraduate and Master’s (French) degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. She loved to travel and was a graduate assistant at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland before she and Michael married and settled in Philly. When Michael got offered a job in Italy, they moved there, she made their home, and Marisa was born. There were a couple of moves back and forth to Italy before they settled in Wellesley, MA where Paul was born. She was instrumental in founding a community-based food co-op, volunteered with various other organizations, and worked in the home-based technology business that she and Michael built together. She and Michael sold their business when they were in their late 50’s and drove cross-country in a VW van for six months in order to choose a place to retire. They visited cousins in Bisbee, AZ, a former copper mining town. Its combination of artists, colorful history, proximity to Mexico, and hippie vibe proved to be a great fit. Susan jumped right into the community by working at the Bisbee Visitor’s Center, Copper Queen Library, and getting deeply involved with the Bisbee Food Co-op. She then turned her attention to the funding and founding of the Bisbee Boys & Girls Club. While living in Bisbee, she and Michael looked toward their next stage in life and helped found a co-housing community in Tucson, where they have been residing for the last 12 years. Once again, Susan immediately became a very valued community member, including taking on the role of Treasurer and organizing weekly potluck dinners. Susan continued to enjoy cultural activities, music, nature, cooking, a local Women’s Group, and travel (despite her experiencing shortness of breath due to a persistent heart valve issue). She was “travel agent” for many family trips, including Moab, UT in May 2023, and was thrilled to celebrate her and Michael’s 60th wedding anniversary during a family trip to Oakland, CA in Dec. 2023. In recent years she participated in university classes, loved to read, send links of New York Times articles to her children, give cooking advice, and do crossword puzzles - her 80th birthday party cake was decorated as a crossword puzzle! She would silently correct people’s grammar (sometimes not so silently!) and kept everyone informed about the great items she found at “Trader Joe” (as she called it). She had an incredible memory – she loved to reminisce about childhood events with her siblings, share details with Marisa & Paul about theater shows she’d seen or books she’d read, and recount memorable meals, even from decades ago! She was smart, supportive, highly organized, and completely comfortable with who she was. All of this, plus her warm smile, sense of humor, and boundless loving nature is how she’ll be remembered. Susan didn’t wish to have a funeral. A celebration of life will be planned for the Spring. Donations in her honor can be made to Boys & Girls Club of Bisbee https://www.bgcbisbee.org/ or Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra https://sasomusic.org/donate-….
