Susan Rene's obituary

Susan Rene Nance, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and faithful servant of Christ, passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the age of 74.

Rene is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Sidney Nance; her children, Amy Nance Ketterman, Bradley Nance and his wife Jennifer, and Kevin Nance and his wife Allison; and her greatest joy—her four grandchildren: Braxton (16), Caden (12), Evangeline (6), and Ronan (1). She is also survived by her sister, Janice Tatum and her husband Jim, and was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Lowe and Esther Byrd Lowe.

Born on January 8, 1951, in High Point, North Carolina, Rene met Sidney at a church picnic at her home congregation, Oak Hill Friends Meeting and later married on June 15, 1969, and together shared a life of love, adventure, and deep faith. Their journey took them around the world through Sidney’s service with the U.S. State Department, raising their family in countries including England, Saudi Arabia, Papua New Guinea, Suriname, Tunisia, Zambia, the United Arab Emirates, the Dominican Republic, and Bahrain. Since 2000, they made their home in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Rene, affectionately known as “Nene” to her grandchildren and countless children she cared for over the years, poured her heart into caring for others. Whether it be the children living in her neighborhood, or daycares at embassies, military bases, or churches, her nurturing spirit and steadfast faith left a lasting impression. A true prayer warrior and example of Christ’s love, Rene lived with kindness, grace, and humility. Her legacy of compassion, patience, and unwavering trust in God lives on in all who knew and loved her.

Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church of Woodbridge on August 16th at 11:00 AM, and at Oak Hill Friends Meeting in High Point, NC, on September 13th at 11:00 AM. Receptions will follow each service in the respective church's fellowship halls. All family and friends are welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to one of the below, in honor of Rene’s lifelong dedication to caring for others:
