Kindness was so fundamental to my mom's philosophy on life, it's hard to pick just one. One thing I remember, also from her photos, is how she loved snapping impromptu photographs of strangers with her analog camera. She had this ability to really SEE people, in their beautiful individuality. As I look at the smiles on faces in those photos, I think people really felt seen in a loving way by her. She practiced charity regularly, always signing up to feed the homeless with her church, and started her own fundraisers to relieve suffering in the world. A few times when I was growing up, people stayed with us who needed help getting out of a bad situation. By these acts of kindness, I got the message early on that privilege isn't something to be taken for granted - if I'm succeeding in life, it's my responsibility to help those around me succeed too. So really, the essence of community.

Susie was always there for me, especially when I was at one of the lowest points in my life. She was a steadfast, loving friend. We both shared a love for nature and art. It is because of Susie that I started my career as a teacher. Susie will live on in my heart, and I am eternally grateful that she was my friend.
