Sue's obituary
Susan Appleton Jowett, a longtime resident of Brunswick, Maine, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2024, at the age of 87.
Born on October 19, 1937, to Lyman Appleton and Winifred Oakes Appleton, Susan grew up with a passion for creativity and a deep appreciation for the arts.
She graduated from Abbot Academy in 1955 and went on to attend Simmons College with a degree in retailing. Her artistic journey also led her to study at the Portland School of Art in later years.
Sue started The Mudworks, her own pottery studio. She also helped found The Craft Center, a school and workshop for artists that included pottery, jewelry making, and silkscreening. Through this endeavor, she provided a space where artists could hone their craft and share their passion with the community.
A lover of the outdoors, Sue spent many happy summers at the family beach home on Drake’s Island and also enjoyed fly fishing amidst Maine’s natural beauty. In her younger years, she excelled as an athlete—playing tennis, fencing, and serving as a softball catcher.
Her adventurous spirit also took her around the world; she traveled to China, the Cayman Islands, Italy, and Mexico, embracing new cultures and experiences along the way.
Sue had a lifelong love for animals, especially her dogs, whose companionship brought her great joy throughout her life. She was also an avid reader who found solace and entertainment in books.
In addition to her professional accomplishments and personal passions, Sue gave back to her community through volunteer work at the Mid Coast Food Bank, a cause close to her heart.
Sue is survived by her devoted husband Doug Jowett of Brunswick; her children Mark Evans, Jennifer Evans, and Rebecca Taber; and her brother Tom Appleton. She leaves behind many grandchildren, nieces, great-grandchildren, and stepchildren. She also leaves behind cherished memories shared with those who knew her best.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sue’s memory to the Mid Coast Food Bank.
