Susan's obituary
Susan Johnston, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025, surrounded by her loving family after a long and courageous battle with chronic pain and other complications. She was 77 years old.
Born on March 17, 1948, in St. Louis, Missouri, Susan was the cherished daughter of Clarence and Iona Anderson. She grew up alongside her beloved siblings: older sister Joyce, younger brother Dale, and younger sister Gay Lynn. From a young age, Susan’s warmth, artistic spirit, and strong work ethic were evident to all who knew her.
On August 3, 1968, Susan married the love of her life, Michael Dale Johnston. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and shared strength. Their greatest joy came with the birth of their daughter, Amy Susan Johnston Borah, who, along with her husband Chad Borah, brought two beautiful granddaughters into Susan’s life: Lillian and Mae Belle Borah. Her family was her greatest pride and joy, and she poured her heart into every role she held—whether that was crafting with her granddaughters, supporting her daughter, or walking side by side with her husband through life’s journey.
Susan was known for her kindness, resilience, and creativity. A true artist at heart, she had a knack for making beautiful things with her hands and always found joy in crafting—whether it was making jewelry, painting, or coming up with new projects to share with others. She was not only “crafty,” but also clever and deeply thoughtful in the way she approached life. Her humor never waned, even in the face of hardship, and she met death just as she lived—bravely, with grace, and a smile.
Her presence will be deeply missed but never forgotten. The values she lived by—love, kindness, perseverance, and laughter—live on through her family and all who were lucky enough to know her.
A celebration of life will be held for close family and friends on June 14th at Laumeier Sculpture Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Susan’s name to a local art program or chronic pain support organization of your choice.
Rest peacefully, Susan we know you are reunited with so many. Your light lives on in the hearts of all who loved you.
