Susan's obituary

Susan J. Elliott of New Fairfield, CT, died with her children by her side on February 6, 2023 at Danbury Hospital Center. She was 66 years old.

Susan was born on November 19, 1956 in New York City, NY, daughter of Joseph and Gertrude (Strempel) Elliott.

Susan was always a New Yorker at heart, no matter where life took her. Growing up in The Bronx, she embodied the tough New York attitude. She would often venture over to Manhattan as a child to visit the New York Public Library and Museum of Natural History. She was even a season ticket holder for the New York Yankees later in life.

Susan loved to learn and spent many years attending college in her pursuit of multiple degrees. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College with her bachelor’s degree in English. She earned her master’s degree in Psychology from Cambridge College and a Juris Doctor degree from the UC Berkeley School of Law. In addition to education, she loved to read and had a substantial book collection.

Susan had a real passion for helping others which was evident in her life’s work as a lawyer, counselor and best-selling author. She began practicing law in Texas in 2003. Her work as attorney eventually brought her back to New York.

Shortly after Susan returned to New York, she began working on a book to help others get over a bad breakup. In 2009, Susan became a best-selling author when she published her book Getting Past Your Breakup: How to Turn A Devastating Loss Into the Best Thing That Ever Happened to You. She followed up that book with Getting Back Out There: Secrets to Successful Dating and Finding Real Love After the Big Breakup. She would build on this work by counseling people that had been through difficult break ups, as well as providing advice through her Mean Lady Talking podcast. Her clients loved her because of how compassionate and thoughtful she was.

Susan was married to Michael DiCarlo on November 23, 1996, he predeceased his wife in 2009. Michael was the love of her life, supporting her in her pursuit of her dreams. Her dreams moved them across the country numerous times. Susan and Michael enjoyed riding their Harleys together and traveling. They shared a particular fondness for Italy. Susan devoted her time to taking care of Michael in the last year of his life when he was suffering from brain cancer.

Susan had a love for pets and animals. She gave a great life to many dogs and cats and always considered her pets to be family members. She also loved to feed and watch the birds, deer and turkeys when she lived out in the country.

Susan is survived by her loving children; Christopher DeCarlo and partner Heather Johnson of Wassaic, NY, Michael DeCarlo and wife Carrie of Midland Park, NJ, Nicholas DeCarlo and wife Kristen of Rutland, MA, Theresa (DiCarlo) Andis and husband Matt Andis of Indianapolis, IN, and Gina DiCarlo and fiancé David Lopez of Brooklyn, NY. Susan adored her grandchildren; Christopher, Derek, Samantha, Keira, Brynn, Savana, Emma, and Sadie.
