Susan's obituary

On Saturday, November 7th, 2020, Susan Mary (Roberts) Easton, loving wife, and mother of three children, passed away at the age of 61 after a long and courageous fight with pseudobulbar palsy ALS. Susan was born on December 30th, 1959 in Santa Cruz, CA to Ronald Roberts and Judy (Grever) Roberts.

Susan spent the better part of her career making a difference in thousands of patient lives starting in 1979. She was passionate about her work in healthcare and served in a variety of roles ranging from direct patient care to launching one of the first electronic health records and transforming IT and analytics in service of a patient-centered health system. She quickly rose to senior leadership roles based not solely on her performance, but also on her commitment to listening, building relationships, staying positive, and loving others.

On February 14th, 1981, she married Gerald (Jerry) Steven Easton. During their life together they raised her daughter Camille Gandolfi, their children, daughter Jesi, son Benjamen and his daughter Lily Clay.

Susan was a lifelong learner and continuously aspired to the next great challenge. She always had a goal of higher education and completed a bachelor’s and Master’s degrees nearly concurrently graduating in 2001, but her first focus was always as a mother and provider. She continued to seek educational pursuits and was a voracious learner throughout her life.

Susan loved spending time outdoors hiking, exploring the beach, and never shied away from trying new sports like rock climbing and surfing. She was a talented musician and songwriter, a passion which she shared with her husband. When ALS limited her ability to work professionally, she quickly resumed her passion for sewing and was prolific in her gifts of beautiful quilts and children’s clothing.

She was known for her infectious optimism and vision for good in the world. She had an endless well of love from which to give to those close to her and a compassionate spirit that only saw the best in those around her.

Susan was preceded in death by her father, Ronald. She is survived by her husband Jerry, her children Camille, Jesi, and Ben, grandchildren Austin and Madison, her great-grandchild Michael, her mother Judy, and her two brothers Gary and Lance.

In her own powerful words in one of her last notes, Susan acknowledged that “as humans, we take for granted, unknowingly, of course, the gift of the simple things…the ability to swallow, speak, walk. We rush from priority to priority without mindfulness of what comes naturally to us. And, if I had thought I might never be able to say words again, I would have said things even more carefully and listened with a bigger heart and a more open mind.”

May we all honor Susan’s memory by embracing what we most loved about her in our daily interactions with one another. Honesty with kindness, respect for one another, and deep compassion for those suffering. To her children, she always encouraged listening to the voice deep inside one’s heart as a guide for outer actions and words. Her legacy is so powerful in those touched by her love.
