Sue was born in Missouri and was raised with her older sister and two brothers. She moved to California at the age of 10 with her mom. They lived in Concord where she married and raised her 4 children. After her first marriage a friend introduced Sue to Pat where they fell in love, married and moved to Sonora California in 1983. Sue stayed in the area, worked various jobs and joined the Moose Lodge where she made many friends. She became very involved with the Women Of The Moose for over 30 years where she had many roles. One of these roles was getting donations to help women and children of domestic violence. She also learned to Square Dance and became very good at it going on to dance in and winning competitions.

Sue was a very giving and loving person. All that knew her loved her very much. She will be greatly missed by many.

Sue is survived by two of her children David Hartzell and Steven Hartzell, her sister Lois Mattingly, 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Sue was preceded in death by her husband Pat Carlin in 1986, grand-daughter Stephanie Campbell-Hartzell in 2007, daughter Mary Hartzell in 2023 and son Kevin Hartzell in 2024.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in her name.
