Susie's obituary

It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Susan (Susie) Carol Blalock. She was 64 years old. Though Susie’s health was failing for years, few people knew the extent to which she struggled. Her joy for life, indomitable spirit and love of her family kept her pushing through the difficult times.

Susie was born in Hamilton, OH on July 8, 1960, to the late William (Bill) and Jean Fetherland. Susie grew up in Fairfield, OH where she was a tree climber, Girl Scout, a member of Fairfield Church of Christ and a Fairfield Indian. She raised her family in Hamilton, OH where she and her Aunt Weezy frequently played bingo. Susie spent many summers with her family at Hueston Woods State Park where they would fish, swim, camp, and attend the annual Maple Syrup Festival. She worked at the “Y” for many years until she met and married her beloved and moved to Longview, TX. In Longview, she dedicated many years of service to animal control for the city. She also worked for the State of Texas, Office of the Attorney General in Tyler. Susie passed on January 16, 2025, in Tyler, TX.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 30 years, Charles (Chuck) Blalock, sister Amy Cholkas, daughters Mandy (Dallas Winkler), Becky Lonsberry (Danny Barnard), grandchildren Brody, Braxton, Liam, Camy, Brynna, Emmitt, Easton and her dearest feline children, Ralph and Rhae. She is also survived by many stepchildren, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Patrick Fetherland, mother-in-law, Mona Brown, father-in-law Tommy Brown, and brother-in-law, Peter Cholkas.

She will be remembered for her love of cooking and baking, any reason for a themed party (complete with festive goodies and headbands), feeding feral squirrels, playing Rummy and board games (never EVER letting her children win), singing any and every song, and being the most perpetually positive person you could ever meet. Her smile sparkled and she smelled of baby powder and vanilla and you could always find her with a Diet Dr. Pepper in her hand (no ice). Susie cared deeply for her family and friends, not out of obligation, but because that is who she was. Her laughter echoed through the halls of every building she entered, reminding us all that life is too short to take too seriously.

Although she did not have a church home, she loved the Lord, chose faith over fear, and accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior.

If there was ever an animal in need, you could bet Susie would be there with treats in hand and a heart full of love. Because of her never-ending love of animals, we ask that in lieu of flowers, you please consider making a Memorial Donation to Longview PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving) in Susie’s name.

As Susie would like us to celebrate her life rather than mourn her passing, there will be a public celebration of life in the near future with details to come.

There is so much more that should be said, but in the end, what she did was make the world brighter. She was one of a kind and will never be forgotten by those who were fortunate enough to know her. “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” – Dr. Seuss.
