Pastor Sungman Chung, 76, deeply loved and respected pastor, preacher, author, and loving husband to Pastor Hyaikyung Grace Chung; caring father of Esther Chung-Kim (& Steven Kim), Paul Chung (& Jenny Oh), and Mary Chung March (& John March). He delighted in his grandchildren, Nathan Kim (17), Josiah March (15), Eli Kim (14), Ethan Chung (13), Mercy March (13), Noah Chung (10), Daniel March (10), and Luke March (6). Pastor Chung passed away on June 23, 2021. Born in Seoul, South Korea on May 20, 1945, Pastor Chung was the oldest of seven children born to the late Yongki Chung and Jungae Bok. Pastor Chung graduated with a BA in Philosophy from Yonsei University, M.Div. from Drew University, Th.M. from Princeton Theological Seminary, and D.Min. from Drew University. He loved to read the Bible, especially Revelation and memorized a lot of it. He led a preaching clinic for 15 years and published two books based on his sermons, Jesus Only (2007) and Eternal Gospel (2013). He had hoped to publish them into English one day. He started Bethel United Methodist Church of NJ and served it for 40 years until his retirement (1977-2017). After retirement, he continued his preaching and caring ministry with his wife through their non-profit organization. In his last days, he was surrounded by his family members. He will be deeply missed. A celebration of his life will be held Friday, 6/25/21 @ 8 PM (indoor service) and Saturday, 6/26/21 @ 10 AM (outdoor service) at Grace-Bethel UMC, 396 Broad Avenue, Leonia, NJ. Interment (burial) will be at Laurel Grove (Totowa, NJ) immediately after the Saturday service at 11:30 AM. Only Friday 8 PM (EDT) service will be live-streamed.
