Suhail's obituary

Dr. Suhail A Khouri, age 78, passed away on February 4, 2022. Born in Haifa to Awwad and Naiefa, he was the big brother and leader of his eight siblings. From a young age, he set ambitious goals for himself and with self-assurance, worked his way into the Baghdad University School of Dentistry, where he graduated in the top three of his class. It is at the Dental School that he fell in love at the first sight of a beautiful classmate. He courted Maha with confident persistence and poetry, and eventually won her favor and that of her intimidating father. It was a classic love story in a time in which such love stories were rare. He married the love of his life and they built and enjoyed a beautiful life together over 50 years.

He started his career in the Jordanian Armed Forces and rose to the rank of Captain as a medical officer. Seeking to pursue bigger dreams in dentistry, he decided to specialize in orthodontics, which became his passion. In this career as an American Board Certified Orthodontist, he climbed to the top while serving as a professor, treating royals, innovating new techniques, inventing and patenting new orthodontic pliers, lecturing at conventions, and publishing an academic book as well as articles in elite medical journals. He eventually settled in St. Louis, Missouri, where he established a successful private practice and enjoyed some of the best years of his life professionally and socially. He retired in 2017 and soon after moved to Chevy Chase, Maryland to be closer to his son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren, whom he adored (and who adored him). He would often say that his greatest joy was seeing loved ones achieving their own success and happiness. An incredibly generous person, he never hesitated to give a helping hand to anyone in need. Despite all his accomplishments, this is his greatest legacy and the reason that he is so loved by so many.

Suhail is survived by his wife, Maha; his son, Zaidoon; his daughter-in-law, Olivia; his grandchildren, Leo and Lexa; his brothers Simon and Raymond; his sisters Sumaya, Suhaila, and Antoinette; and many other dear family members by blood and by marriage in the Khouri and Kanderian clans, for whom he was a pillar. Words cannot express how much he will be missed.
