In lieu of flowers

Please consider a contribution to Lay Sue to rest at El Rosario Butterfly Preserve.

Background

If Sue touched your life, please consider donating to help fund the Butterfly Wonderland Foundation via this trip where she will be laid to rest:

Not one to sit still, Sue was an gifted gardener, educator, artist, philanthropist, advocate, activist, world traveler and cultural aficionado.  She particularly loved science, and graduated from Wake Forest University with a degree in Biology in 1962.

Sue taught many of the kids in our neighborhood about science right in our backyard, and butterflies were a favorite.  Each spring, we watched the tiny eggs on a parsley plant become caterpillars, then stunning swallowtail butterflies.  We'd bring toads and crawdads home, muddy from the creek and curious about nature, and she encouraged exploration & learning throughout our lives.

Later in life, Sue would plant milkweed in that same backyard to support the dwindling Monarch butterfly population.  She was enthralled by the annual migration of the 'Super Generation' which is the fourth generation of Monarch that somehow finds its way from Canada to Mexico each year to start their lifecycle over again.

To honor her love of travel and butterflies, we wish to give her that trip to a Mexican butterfly preserve.   Her final journey will be to El Rosario Butterfly Preserve in Mexico, where her remains will be scattered during the annual Monarch migration next February.

Updates

Update from April 13, 2023

Our roster for the trip to take Sue's remains to El Rosario in February has been reduced from four to two, so our fundraising goal is now $2,300. If you prefer to donate to a nonprofit Sue was passionate about, the family suggests making a contribution to the National Parks or PBS in Sue's name. Thanks for keeping her legacy of giving alive.

Update from April 10, 2023

This trip will involve four people, and there are some seats left if you want to accompany our family to Sue's final resting place among the Monarchs. Tour proceeds benefit the Butterfly Wonderland Foundation. More at: ACloserLookTours.com
