I’m so glad that Stu studied dragonfly’s. The month of September and August are full of them and each time I see one I get to think of Stu.  I’ve been missing him lots lately. I have so many questions to ask about the many things that interested him. Just as Bill Pence said, “He really was just that smart” and a very willing, kind teacher. Thank you for reminding me of those Saturday competitions . Stu always came to my house after with a new slid-ruler tucked under his arm. I found many when clearing out the house.

How much I love him.

Fritzi

He Was Just That Smart

Stuart Galley and I were both at Grossmont HS in San Diego county in 1960. Stu was a sophomore and I was a junior. We were both in the AP program.

One day my math teacher announced that we should consider competing at the Occidental College Math Field Day, a competition open to high school students from all over California. I got A's in math and held a high opinion of my skills so I rallied a couple of my fellow juniors (who also fancied their aptitude) and decided to enter. I knew that Stu was the top math student in the sophomore class so I invited him to join us.

We drove to Pasadena and entered the same event--a test that required speed and intuition to solve pages of problems one hour. I had to skip quite a few during the allotted time. Stuart probably solved them all and left early. When they announced, "First Prize, Stuart Galley," my fellow Grossmont juniors cheered as the juniors and seniors from over 100 other high schools politely clapped.

We returned to the Occidental Math Field Day in 1961. I knew enough to not compete against Stu, so I entered a "presentation event" and talked about Transcendental Numbers. Once again, Stuart beat the state's best. The judges made special mention that it was his second win. I picked up a few fourth place points and Grossmont HS won the team award.

The next year, I went to Caltech; Stu also chose Caltech the following year. I always admired his calm demeanor and modesty; his behavior masked his genius. Lots of folks get degrees from Caltech and MIT; some of them start companies, but it's rare young sophomore that beats the socks off of juniors and seniors of the best high schools in California--he was just that smart.

STU was my younger brother. It's too soon to settle my brain around just 1 or 2 stories, since we shared love for so many many years. He's not gone; he lives always in my heart. I will miss him more than words can express. Find a special angel, my dearest, and then find and save one for me, for I shall not be long in following you. Eliza Lynne

I was sad to hear of the passing of Stu Galley. I saw an article about it today online. I didn't know him, but I am a fan of all of the Infocom Implementers. And, having played his games, I hope it's not too forward to say I feel I know him a little bit. After reading his obituary, I know he has done much since his days at Infocom and lived a very full life. I am glad for that and thankful for the joy his interactive fiction works brought to me as a child and still bring me this day as an adult. That kind of creativity is a gift and I'm very glad he shared it with the rest of us. It's odd. I had already decided to replay Moonmist tonight before hearing the news. Now I will do so in his honor. I offer my condolences to his family and friends. May God bless you all.
Stuart was like a brother; always comfortable to be around. I will miss him daily, 3000 miles away.

I was so sorry to hear of Stu's passing. I didn't know him personally but looked diligently for his posts on the Arlington List each day. I am so glad that I reached out to him in May to say "Thank you" for his contributions- that I really enjoyed them. His response was "It's my pleasure, Shari. Thank you for your support! /stu/" I wish his family and close friends comfort in their memories of him and hopefully a good dose of laughter through your tears.

Although they are only ten years older than me , Stu and Fritzie were like parents to me from the year I left Trinidad to go to university onwards. They were the model of a happy and healthy marriage and taught me so much about the world and life. I spent summers and Christmases with their little family and always felt valued and loved. I really feel that they saved me ! I learned to value our Earth and they taught me to recycle, conserve energy, and do for others. My first summer working at Drumlin Farm pointed me toward a love of teaching children even though I made little money, Stu pointed out that it was the ideal job. I also learned important parenting skills by watching their interaction with Jake who I would babysit and pretend he was mine. When I was expecting my daughter, Yusra, while living in Spain, you sent me Brazelton's child care book which I read like a bible, and enclosed the green corduroy Snugli which you had used with Jake. It was a lifesaver!

I'll never forget one day when Jake got outside and toddled across the usually busy street. Stu ran across to scoop him back and bring him into the house and gave him the only spanking I ever saw him give Jake because he was so distraught. Stu was so gentle and peaceful and kind but the thought of anything happening to Jake brought him to tears.

We shared a lot in common as uncle and niece- from reading his collection of Mad magazines, to similar traits like reading out loud all the signage we drove by. We would also take our time exploring new places both indoors and out. He taught me about the history of the area, took me canoeing on the Concord river, and has always been the most interesting person to talk to and listen to.

I can never thank you enough for what you did for me and I hope I have tried to give back to others like you did. You gave me an appreciation of beautiful music which I cherish to this day. I will love you always, my amazing "uncle Stu."
Stu was a fine man, a good person, and loved by all who knew him. He was like a father to my wife Lee, and very important to our family. I enjoyed cooking Palestinian dishes for him because he appreciated them so much. We will miss him.
