Steven's obituary
Dr. Steven Frederick Yellen, MD, passed away on October 31, 2022, in Palo Alto, CA, at the age of 74. Steve was born to Dr. Harry Joseph and Lucille Ruth Yellen née France on January 24, 1948. He grew up in Lincolnwood, IL, attended Niles West High School, and graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago.
After receiving his MD from Chicago Medical School in 1975, he joined his father’s cardiology practice. He spent the next 46 years working at various hospitals in the Chicago area, most recently at Amita Health Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center. Adored by patients and staff members alike, he was known as a very caring doctor with a great bedside manner. After retiring in 2021, he moved to Foster City, CA to begin his most important calling: being a “professional grandpa.”
Steve, an avid golfer and poker player, claimed he was good enough at poker to break even and, more importantly, to know when he was the “fish.” He loved joking around, telling stories, playing guitar, and writing silly song lyrics. A romantic at heart, Steve was a free spirit, limited only by his organizational woes, and anything related to technology seemed to break down in his otherwise capable hands.
Steve was married twice, first to Suzanne Biron Yellen and then to Susan Quandt, who tragically passed away in 2008. He is survived by sister Karen (Robert) Dillon; two sons, Benjamin (Jenny) Yellen and Jeremy (Sasha) Yellen; two stepdaughters, Jennifer Weigel and Kate Jeppesen; and four grandchildren, Avery Weigel, Elliott Weigel, Tsumugi Yellen, and Jacob Yellen. Steve was predeceased by his parents, his wife, and his older brother, Gary Yellen.
Steve will be greatly missed by his friends, colleagues, and family. Contributions to celebrate his memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
