Steven “Steve” Walling passed away at his home on Tuesday August 11th, 2020 in Oviedo, Florida at the age of 66. Steve was born in German Town, PA on December 1, 1953, and spent his early years in New Castle, Delaware. He attended elementary school in Hollywood, Florida and graduated from Oviedo (Florida) High School in 1972.

In 1975, Steve joined the US Air Force. He served for six years at Incirlik AFB in Turkey and at Ellsworth AFB near Rapid City, SD. While in Rapid City, he married Kimberly Naugle and together they had two daughters. After his military service, Steve attended South Dakota School of Mines and Technology where he graduated with honors with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in 1986.

Steve’s career spanned 34 years and several disciplines. He started at Texas Instruments in Colorado Springs, CO before he moved on to Computer Technology Associates and then Loral Command and Control Systems. Later he worked at Kiewit Companies, Guarantee Life Insurance, Sodak Gaming, Sunterra Resorts and finally Veritas where he spent eighteen years on the C Lab Team. Even in retirement he could not sit still; He spent his last few years launching a start-up called Vespoid Technologies with his daughter and a good friend.

Steve loved all things STEM and science fiction. He found joy in keeping up with STEM news, particularly space exploration and new technologies. He enjoyed sharing his passion for various sci-fi franchises like Star Trek, Firefly and Star Wars with his family and friends.

Steve is survived by his daughters Sheri (Josh Williamson) and Charlotte (Sarah Bowman) (both of Rapid City, SD), his sister Charlotte Walling (Deland, FL), his grandchildren Jasmine, Kage, Spencer and Race and friends so special they may as well be family, Armando Ogando and Carl Knickerbocker. He is proceeded in death by his parents John and Charlotte (Fleri) Walling.
A socially distanced memorial will be held at People’s Funeral Home in Sanford, FL on August 26th at 6:30. Another will follow in Rapid City, SD at a date to be announced. Those wishing to honor Steve’s life can make a donation in his name to the American Sleep Apnea Association.
