Steven's obituary

We deeply mourn the passing of our father Steve Suplin who left this world on September 30, 2023 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was born on January 23, 1947 in Hollywood, California to Thelma and Hyman Suplin. Steve loved baseball. His enthusiasm for the game began as a young boy when the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958. He bought his first pack of baseball cards at a smoke shop on the way to school. A 1956 Topps Duke Snider. In his eyes, a design no baseball card has surpassed since. It’s a story he would recall often.

A man of words, Steve pursued his passion for the English language and Mass Communications at the University of Southern California, in 1970. After moving to Washington State, he furthered his studies in 1982 by earning a B.A. in Education from Central Washington University.

Steve’s gift for communication brought him to a variety of media outlets, starting his career at KRST in 1971, an FM radio station in Albuquerque where he also did weekend Sports at KOA-TV, an ABC affiliate. In 1976 he would go on to work at KZAM in Bellevue, spinning records, doing sports and tennis play-by-play until 1980. After the station was sold, he worked one year at KZOK. He played a vital role in introducing his listeners to many of the now legendary rock n’ roll artists of the 70s.

Baseball and communication would eventually lead Steve to a position as assistant baseball coach at Shoreline & Shorecrest Highschool from 1983 to 1999, where he taught English Literature and Physical Education. Steve was a loyal fan of the Seattle Mariners and the Seattle Seahawks. He was also an avid college football fan, rooting for his alma matter, the USC Trojans. He married Karlene Kaempfer in 1982, had twin boys, Sam and Seth, in 1985 and divorced in 1989.

Steve found comfort and refuge in his faith in Jesus Christ. The hope of eternity with Christ, carried him until his final breath. He cherished spending time with his four granddaughters. With sons living out of state and overseas, he made every effort to be as close to them as possible. Steve moved to Minnesota in late 2020 to be near Sam and his granddaughter and made frequent visits to Switzerland, where Seth lives with his family.

He leaves behind his two sons, Sam and Seth Suplin, his daughter-in-law Sarah Suplin, and his cherished granddaughters, Amelia, Felin, Amelie, and Nola Suplin. He will be missed by Karlene Kaempfer, Tina Kaempfer, Jim Bammert, Tess (Troi and Tevyn) Bammert, Holly (Alex and Lucy) Mittelstaedt, and many more.

Through his trials, triumphs, and adversities, Steve's life serves as a testament to his love for family, and Jesus Christ’s unfailing love towards all who seek him. A father, grandfather, coach and friend, Steve will forever be remembered by his loved ones.
