Steven's obituary
Steven was a talented florist and event designer whose career spanned over four decades in Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. After doing design/layout for a newspaper and sign-painting for a grocery store, Steven found his calling in the floral business. He honed his craft at Wonder Flowers in San Gabriel before becoming a sought-after florist in Hancock Park, Los Angeles—first at Kipling’s Flowers and then at his own shop—both on Larchmont Blvd. His creative work was featured at some of the biggest social events in Los Angeles, often at the California Club, the Jonathan Club and the Wilshire Country Club. He had many clients who called on him throughout the years, to help make their families' weddings, funerals and celebrations special. Steven's unique style of floral arranging often included greenery that was just as varied and gorgeous as the flowers. He loved to use flower buds in addition to full blooms, to give a natural, fresh look that would keep blooming for many days. To find the best flowers, Steven would get to the L.A. Flower market before dawn, make special orders and even scour his own garden or his sister's garden to get the exact element he was seeking.
Steven later worked in the Disneyland Art Department, Los Angeles Party Designs and did freelance work/collaborations with other florists. There were many memorable projects: a party for Julie Andrews and other celebrities; decorating Rose Parade cars, carriages and equestrian units; movie premier parties for Disney films at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood; VIP events at Disneyland--such as the opening of the Indiana Jones attraction; an alien-themed party in a hangar at the Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar; Pete Wilson's gubernatorial ball and many more. Steven worked through Southern California, from Santa Barbara to San Diego, Pasadena to Palm Springs. His work occasionally took him farther afield, including projects in San Francisco, Las Vegas and New Orleans. His work life was filled with many adventures and friends who share these good memories.
Aside from his career, Steven was an integral part of his family. For over 30 years, he lived next door to his sister Phyllis and her husband Ray Bemiller. He enjoyed family time, especially meals together celebrating birthdays and holidays. He loved to host Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve dinner, and always put out a generous spread. Although he never married nor had children of his own, he was a beloved uncle to his niece Audra, and nephews Taylor and Quinton. Steven kept in touch with many relatives and family friends, reliably sending thoughtful cards to each of them every year, even when his health was failing. Steven maintained his faith in God, and enjoyed attending Sunday services when he could. He is survived by his sister, Phyllis (Ray) Bemiller, nephews Donald Miedecke, Quinton (Megann) Bemiller, Taylor (Jeshanah) Narabemi, and niece, Audra (Paul) Feld; great nieces and nephews, Ivan, Sandrine, Lillie, Jade, Violet, Stevie, Harlan and Clyde; cousins and close friends, including but not limited to Cheryl Martin and Jack Fowler, Don Combs, Amanda Lin, Therese Whalen, Jeanne Wallukait and Joy Cain Miedecke. Steven was predeceased by his brother, Ronald Miedecke (1946-2008). A private memorial will be planned at a later date. In lieu of donations, please give flowers to someone you love.
