I worked with Steve at puppet place in Chicago in late sixties early seventies. . He was a screaming queen and a friend. Zichrono livracha Steve.

Everywhere I look in my house Steven is there - books, videos, and DVDs that he either recommended I buy or that he bought for me; photos of him on the walls in the den, front hallway, and living room; three shelving units in the front bathroom that he recommended as being just the right size to fit in a specific area; the Winnie-the-Pooh framed and autographed illustrations that he gave me for my 50th birthday;  the stand with three bowls for my cat (dry food, wet food, water) instead of the usual two; the comforter on my bed because it's reversible and he knows that both colors are my favorites; three framed photos of giraffes in my den because he knows they're my favorite animal.  We considered ourselves to be brother and sister, and introduced each other that way, and when I talk about him I say "my brother." So, as far as I'm concerned, he's not gone. I even speak to him when I need some advice and if I listen hard enough I hear him telling me what I should do.

Golden family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Life is so precious and when it is cut short, the ones left behind are left with a hole in there heart. Death has been a long time enemy of mankind, along with sickness. Soon our God Jehovah will take matters into his own hand by ridding us of death and all sickness. Isaiah 25:8 says “He will swallow up death forever, And the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces.” Isaiah 33:24 says, And no resident will say: “I am sick.” May family and friends take comfort in knowing soon Jehovah God will reverse the effects of death. John 5:28,29 says to not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.

This is an interview recorded by Steve Zall and Sid Fish where Steven Golden describes the various puppets on a display of a small sample of the many puppets to be seen at the International Puppetry Museum in Pasadena. This was taped on 12/15/2012. Sadly the museum and Steven are both gone, but you can still see and hear him in this video.
Steve and I shared a love of puppets in opera. He often emailed links to new discoveries. Then we would talk about the productions. He was a warm and generous person with a great sense of humor. I miss hearing from him.
Steven and I spoke on the phone about once a week for the past six years up until a few days before his passing. He was the strongest supporter from the puppet community of my interest in filming puppets with 3D cameras. Anyone who knew him can appreciate how relentless he could be in networking people and recommending activities. He connected me with 3D enthusiasts in New York, Chicago and LA. I have built relationships I would never have had, otherwise and shated our mutual friendship with puppet collector, Alan Cook. He gifted me his entire 3D library, for which I am eternally grateful. May his memory be a blessing.
In response to "When was the last time you spent time with Steven?"
My Puppetry students from CSUN came to the International Puppetry Museum (IPM) in Pasadena to see the Alan Cook collection, Steve came to the door dressed all in black and said “Welcome to the den of iniquity!”   Steve and Alan gave the students a great tour!
Steve fought the good fight. It was his time.  Such an intelligent man and funny , too. He took such good care of Alan. I know he prolonged his life. He was so well organized and helped so much cataloging Alan’s puppet collection. He was frustrated that some others weren’t as dedicated as he was. He loved beautiful things and good food. He will be missed.

Fondest memory of puppeteering with Steve Golden

Years ago when we were performing with The Olde Worlde Puppet Theatre in the Bay Area, we did a show for an event for Stanford Children's Hospital Outpatient Program. It was a Christmas fun day at a local restaurant in Palo Alto.

Great day, lots of kids, games, food and fun and we were walking around with the puppets until show time. Well show time came. We were at the end of the day and all we could think was all these kids were sugar filled and would be bouncing around the entire time. However, the show was Who's that Reindeer, one of the premier Steven Mark Overton productions and the kids were enthralled from the first moment.

So after it was over we starting packing up the props and bagging up the puppets. One little boy was with us backstage and was just fascinated still by all the colors and everything. I just remember Steve being so gentle and kind with this little boy carefully moving him away from the stage being taken down. His mom was standing off to one side in tears and I went over to her to see if she was ok. Her son was severely autistic and non verbal and usually had the attention span of about 5 minutes, but he sat through that entire 45 minute show without making a sound or moving a muscle.

Steve heard that and motioned to me, and we proceeded to unpack, unbag, and stop taking down everything so that boy would touch and look to his hearts content, Steve talking gently to him the entire time. We were there an extra hour or so but no one from the restaurant interrupted, they were all watching from a little ways away.

That's the good soul that was Steve Golden. I will treasure that memory always.
