Steve's obituary

Steven Earl Cruickshank passed away May 27, 2022, at 72 years of age. Steve was born on March 10, 1950, in Great Bend, Kansas to John and Virginia Cruickshank, one of three children. Steve married his beloved wife, Deanne, in 1983 in Great Bend, Kansas. They had two children, Amy Jennings (Steve Budd) and Tyler Cruickshank (Lacey). Steve & his wife moved from Billings, Montana to Denver, Colorado in 1989 where they raised their family and lived for 30 years, before ultimately moving to Summerville, South Carolina in 2019 to be near their children and grandchildren, Brooklyn, Ayla, Hayden, & Sylas.

Steve graduated from Great Bend High School and completed his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at the University of Wyoming in 1977, while working as a carpenter and concrete hand. He had a successful career as a licensed professional engineer in the State of Colorado for 38 years, as well as in the State of South Carolina beginning in 2019. He spent the first years of his career working in the oil & gas industry as a production, drilling, and reservoir engineer for several companies. In 1996, Steve transitioned to working as a structural engineer and completed over 500 underpinning projects using both solid bar and tubular helical piling systems. For the last years of his career, Steve owned his own engineering consulting business prior to his retirement in late 2019.

Steve loved hard and would often remind his family and friends that “love wins”. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, if given a choice he would have spent all his time taking them on little adventures. Steve was also quick to help a friend or neighbor out, especially when there was a project involved. He had a list of jokes for every holiday and would share them with anyone he came across; he had a nickname for everyone. He was always a friendly face and enjoyed getting to speak with and meet new people. He loved the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains where he spent the bulk of his life, and loved to run, hike, camp, fish, and golf as often as he could. Steve also loved the beach and had a passion for snorkeling, he took his family on many snorkeling trips throughout the years to Hawaii, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Steve touched everyone’s life he knew and changed them for the good. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Steve will be missed terribly by all of those who had the opportunity to know and love him.

Steve is survived by his wife Deanne, children Amy and Tyler, sisters Jonalyn Robert (Raoul) and Lee Ramirez (John), and grandchildren Brooklyn, Ayla, Hayden, and Sylas. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Virginia.

A service and celebration of life in honor of Steve will be held in the auditorium at Rock Canyon High School, 5810 McArthur Ranch Road, Highlands Ranch, Colorado at 10:00am on Saturday, June 25. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to:
