Steve's obituary
An enthusiastic specialist in the technical design of high-rise buildings, Nilles spent 16 years with Chicago’s Murphy/Jahn before helping to establish Goettsch Partners as a partner and head of Middle East operations. In recognition of his accomplishments—which include projects throughout the United States as well as in China, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—Nilles was elected to the distinguished College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 2012.
As much as he loved his work, his appreciation of architectural craft was exceeded only by his cherished professional relationships. He is described by former colleagues as a big presence: jovial, warm and beloved.
In spite of his heavy workload across multiple time zones, he always went out of his way to cultivate and maintain close relationships with each of his five children—the accomplishment of which he was most proud.
Steve met his wife, Margaret Arman, while attending Notre Dame. The college sweethearts married in 1980 and celebrated their 40th anniversary this past November. He is loved, revered, and will be forever missed by Maggie, and their five children: Stephanie, Charlie, Gerald, AJ, Anna; and four grandchildren. His surviving siblings, Kathleen, John and Mark Nilles will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his parents, Jerry and Barbara Nilles, his uncle, Monsignor Allan F. Nilles, and his sister, Cynthia (Nilles) Fellman.
A memorial service commemorating his life will be celebrated later this year.
