Today I was looking at coffee makers in a Target, here in Pittsburgh. Without thinking it through, I was trying to find one my Dad could use while visiting. He used to visit us each Christmas, until the year his dementia started to become apparent, and we began to visit him, instead. It’s these simple, every day things that catch me off guard.
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Steve Reilly. I have many fond memories of Steve. I got to know to Susanna from Kester school and we both lived on the same street in Sherman Oaks. I remember Steve reading the "Headless Horseman" to us at a Halloween party when we were probably still in elementary school. The party was held at the old house on Hesby Street. I remember being so terrified (but thrilled) as he read the story to us in the dark. I also have fond memories of all of the pool parties in the summers at the current house. I remember Steve sitting in the spare bedroom, watching football games and when I slept over I remember Sylvia, Susanna's mom and Steve having breakfast, listening to classical music and reading the newspaper on Sunday mornings. Steve introduced my father to the Los Angeles Astronomical Society and he became a member for many years. I remember going up with Susanna to star parties and I particularly remember attending a particular LAAS member meeting one Monday evening. We decided to learn all that we could about the topic so we decided to bring notebooks to take copious notes during the lecture! I had Steve (Mr. Reilly) for algebra when we were still at Van Nuys Jr High. Although I struggled in that class I learned a lot and had a solid foundation for when I took the class again.

My deepest sympathy to you, Susanna, Mike and Derek. I hope the love of family and memories bring you peace and comfort at this time.

My deepest condolences to Susanna, Mike, Derek, and Steve Reilly's extended family.

I will remember Mr Reilly for being the absolute best math teacher I ever had. He knew exactly how to help me build the confidence to overcome my math fears and struggles. He was my hero that year, and I'm sure he was a hero to countless other kids who needed a solid math foundation and guidance. Mr Reilly gave me treasured memories that will last a lifetime. I know I'm not alone. Such was his impact. Sending love to him and his family on his passing.
Mr. Reilly was one of few math teachers whose class I did not dread. He was so kind, so patient, and so in love with his subject. I'm grateful for the many times he put up with my dumb questions. My deepest condolences, Susanna and family.

The last time I "saw" my dad was via FaceTime when he was in the hospital. A much nicer memory was when I actually visited him in person at Valley Vista Senior Living last summer (August of 2020). We were masked and socially distanced, and sat outside for safety's sake, but I was grateful for the chance to see him and happy that I'd brought my son/his grandson to visit, as well.
