We lost my brother Stephen Mello this year. I reside in Maine and he was a resident of Erie, PA. Stephen lived alone but had many friends and family all over the US. I was notified recently that he had passed from a heart attack. We were told that the hospital, landlord and/or emergency contacts couldn't find next of kin. We were very shocked to hear this as there were plenty of us to notify. However, many of Stephen's family and friends aren't up to the task of getting him back home to Maine. I have been asked to get to PA and collect his personal effects and make some executive decisions before his belongings will be thrown away. I also have been told that I will need legal representation to petition the Erie County Courts to release his ashes to me before they scatter them. This has been a very sad, sad situation and time is of the essence. I would love my brother home with us but I am a low income Mom who works two jobs and cannot afford all of the travel and legal fees to do everything for my brother and out of respect for him and what he would want.
