Stephen's obituary

Buchanan Village, New York - We regretfully announce the passing of Stephen Ronald Hagar, 69, of Buchanan, NY. Steve sadly passed away on November 23, 2021, of Covid-19 pneumonia after a long battle with Covid-19 and its complications.
Steve was born in Decatur, Illinois in 1952. He graduated high school from Glenbard West in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, where he excelled on the track team. He graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Campaign Campus in 1976 with a degree in Forestry.
In college Steve served in the Army ROTC, including advanced training at Fort Riley, Kansas in the summer of 1974. In 1976 he was commissioned in the U.S. Army Reserves as a field artillery officer in 4th Battalion, 75th Field Artillery; he was assigned command of Battery B in 1979. He continued his Active Duty for Training courses at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Fort Belvoir, Virginia through 1982. He was promoted to Captain in 1983. He was honorably discharged in 1985.
Steve worked as a certified arborist in the Forestry Division of the Department of Public Works at Palatine Village, Illinois, a northwestern residential suburb of Chicago. He was involved in planting and maintaining all public trees, bushes and flower beds. His forestry team also planned and implemented Landscape Improvement Projects throughout the Village.
In 2003 Steve moved to Montrose, New York in the lower Hudson River valley. He was employed by Lakeside Environmental, a subcontractor for Consolidated Edison of New York, working in Transmission Line Maintenance. In 2006 he started working as Chief Construction Inspector at ConEdison. He was in charge of ensuring that trees didn’t interfere with overhead electric lines When natural disasters caused fallen trees to damage power lines in his county or the New York City area, Steve helped provide emergency services. He retired in 2018.
Steve was predeceased by his father, Nelson Hagar, and mothers Wilma Hagar, Helene Hagar and Phyliss Hagar. He is survived by his older brother, Terry Hagar. His younger sister, Patti Ann Blakley, passed away 20 days after his death.
Steve’s passions included exploring the wilderness, backpacking, camping, biking, crystals, creative writing, science fiction and fantasy fiction. He also was an avid student of Celtic and Native American history, music and spirituality. He admired Teddy Roosevelt and loved to observe wildlife in national parks.
Steve requested no services be held and that his ashes be spread.
