I hadn’t known David for long, at the time he was just a regular at my partners place of work. They knew eachother well enough from his visits before/after dialysis. My partner introduced us a few months into his regular visits, and upon hearing of our love and our story, he insisted we take his van and go on an adventure. As a mechanic, I told David I would check over the old Ford and do some light service before/after our trip. Over dinner we talked and shared stories, after which he gave me a copy of the key to his van, and sent us on our way to prepare. We drove nonstop to the Everglades the next night, camped in the middle of nothing and enjoyed each others company. One of our favorite memories before getting married was spent in that van, living and loving freely. I like to think David knew exactly what he was giving us, not a vehicle to drive, but an adventure to live. I saw him often on his bicycle, and around town in that van. Always smiles, and although it’s been some time since his passing, I’ve only recently learned of this unfortunate news. The spare key he made me will hang on my rack with the rest of my keys, a reminder of his kindness and the impact he made on our lives. Wherever his van may be, I hope it’s serving its purpose, giving someone a new perspective. I hope you are at peace- until next time, David. Thank you for everything.
