Steve's obituary

Stephen Craig “Steve” Spencer, 75, passed away July 19th, 2024 in Nampa, ID. He was born December 10th, 1948, in Des Moines, IA to the late Ruth Evelyn Spencer (née Easter) and Byron Keith “BK” Spencer. He spent his first 5 years in Iowa on his maternal grandparents’ farm, before he and his parents moved to Chula Vista, CA, where he attended Castle Park High School.

In adulthood, he worked as lead night custodian at Sweetwater High School for several years, and later worked also as custodian for the Community Congregational Church in Chula Vista, the same church his family attended for many years.

Steve loved animals and enjoyed spending time with his friends, playing pool, darts, cards, collecting coins, fishing, and taking camping trips to the desert. He had a lifelong interest in antiques and artifacts, for a time running a dedicated store in Chula Vista named The Bloody Stump Trading Post.

He was known for being witty and candid with a firecracker personality, but never hesitated to give the shirt off of his own back for someone in need, whether they were known to him or not. Steve was a talented handyman, and had a knack for making art pieces out of miscellaneous and discarded objects. He was the kind of person you only meet once in a lifetime, and notably determined no matter what life threw at him.

Steve is survived by his two sons, Craig Robert Estes of Albuquerque, NM, Frank Charles Spencer of St. Helens, OR, and his daughter, Jennifer Mae Spencer of San Diego, CA. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and multiple cousins.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation towards the staff of The Orchards of Cascadia, where Steve was a longtime resident, and Signature Hospice for the exceptional care provided.
