Stanley's obituary

On Monday, September 4th, 2023, at the age of 86 Stanley Harrell Sr. slipped away peacefully to his eternal rest. Although we will miss him dearly, we know that: absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

Stanley, affectionately referred to as Stan, was born on October 20th,1936 in Selma, AL. He was one of five children born to James Harrell Sr. and Esther (Chestnut) Harrell. Stan attended Clark Elementary School and worshipped at West Trinity Baptist Church before the family moved to Detroit, MI in 1949 where he continued his education. He was a beloved friendly people person with an amazing sense of humor, humility, and compassion. Many have described him as cool, and charismatic.

In his early years, Stan worked in the restaurant and hospitality industry. He enjoyed working alongside his sister Esther at the renowned Little Harry’s restaurant located near downtown Detroit. He began as a teenage dishwasher and worked his way to the title of Maitre’D in some of the finest establishments in Detroit and Los Angeles CA.

In September of 1955 Stan celebrated the birth of his first son, Derrick. In 1960 He relocated to Los Angeles where he was joined in holy matrimony with Cara McElroy in 1964. Through this union his second son Stanley Jr. was born in 1969. In 1981 Stan married Sandra Miller with whom there were no offspring.

Stanley Sr. always had entrepreneurial aspirations, and engaged in several businesses including real estate, product distribution, and restaurant ownership. In 1988 he founded Stan’s Quick Grooming Agency, a restroom management company which was a roaring success, and employed hundreds in southern California communities.

In 2010 Stan married Alice Givens. The two of them worked in tandem to make the business the success that it became. In his later years Alice was a thoughtful and loving caregiver to Stan.

Stan is preceded in death by sisters, Ester Mickens, Dorothy Bledsoe, and Betty Hardy.

He leaves to mourn his passing: Wife, Alice Harrell; Sons, Derrick Brown and Stanley Harrell Jr.; Brother and sister-in-law, James Harrell Jr. and Juanita Harrell; Granddaughters, Lauren (Brown) Golden-Sims and Morgan Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, loving relatives and friends.

May his memory be a blessing to all.
