SSG Stephen's obituary

SSG Stephen L. Mahan (ret), 69, died February 15, 2019 in his Tallulah,LA home after a long, difficult, well fought battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

SSG Mahan is survived by his wife, Marilyn McNair of Vicksburg, MS; children Holly Mahan Rowe of Tallulah (John of Ferriday) and son, Michael (Jess Baldino of Chicago, IL) both currently stationed at RAF Lakenheath UK. He also leaves behind four beautiful, brilliant grandchildren, Addison, Jax, Iris, and Nick. He also left behind one older brother, Phil Mahan (Em) of Rye, TX who he had a close, fun-loving, caring relationship with that he was able to carry throughout life, throughout each of their journeys. SSG Mahan had three very special “daughters” with distinct relationships that broadened his scope of thinking and ability to love; Miranda Weathersby of Magee, MS, Dr. Claire Weeks Kelly of Crystal Springs, MS, and Dr. Lauren Kern White of Monroe, LA. SSG Mahan was a loving and attentive father and tried to be the best PawPaw for his grandchildren regardless of his illness. He suffered the trauma of Parkinson’s Disease for 37 of his 44 married years.

SSG Mahan is a Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He earned several ribbons and medals during his service in the US Army and Army Reserve. His decorations in order of precedence include; Army Meritorious Unit Commendation, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with Valor, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star Medal (2nd award), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 4 combat stars, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon (2nd), and the Vietnam Service Medal.

SSG Mahan served his entire career dedicated to the US Army in a dual capacity. In the Army Reserve, he was a crew chief, flight medic, and helicopter inspector. In his 30 year civilian career, he worked for the US Army Reserve maintaining the helicopter fleet for the Reserve unit.

Being a natural physicists and teacher, he decided to go to college after his retirement from the military. He and his daughter were able to go to the University of Louisiana at Monroe at the same time which was the most amazing and exciting experience for both of them. He graduated Cum Laude in Physics and taught at Caldwell Parish High School for a year and a half before Parkinson’s Disease inhibited his ability to speak well enough to continue.

SSG Mahan was able to enjoy retirement RV’ing with his wife as part of the CENLA Roadrunners Club out of Alexandria, LA. There they both made kind, loving, helpful friends who made life a little bit easier, more fun, and more exciting traveling local and across the country.

Steve was a loving, Christian who found St. Thomas Episcopal Church to be his home when living in Monroe and Trinity Episcopal Church in Tallulah where he was originally from and moved back to for his last few years.

Visitation and Service for SSG Stephen Mahan will be Saturday, March 02, 2019 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Monroe, LA. Visitation will be from 12-2:00PM with the service at 2:00. His remains will be interred to the columbarium at St. Thomas during the service.
