Sophie's obituary
Sophie Holloway, 88, of Harrison Township, MI, passed away on August 22, 2022, from lung and breast cancer.
Zofja Szczech was born on Dec. 21, 1933 in Bogate Poland. At 3 1/2, she & her mother came to America via Ellis Island to join her father. After graduating from St. Thomas High School in 1952, she briefly attended a journalism program at Michigan State University. A 1954 marriage to Eugene Wachowski produced three children, Donna, Cynthia, and Eugene. While raising 3 children she began her career in business by starting a flower shop with her favorite business partners, her brother Rich and wife Marlene. Together or separately, they went on to own Trudy's Flowers on Chene Street, Cypress Gardens in Detroit, North Pointe Flowers in Sterling Heights, and eventually, Sweeney's Flowers in Grosse Pointe Woods. There was also that time period when Sophie ventured into the bar business with her father. Her businesses thrived, but her marriage didn’t. After many years on her own, Sophie married Harry Holloway in 1980 and became stepmom to Pam, Sheri, Mickey, and Sheila. When they became empty nesters, Sophie and Harry bought a second home in Florida. While daughters Cynthia and Donna ran Sweeney Flowers, Sophie and Harry enjoyed many warm Florida winters. Sophie was predeceased by younger brothers Rich and Teddy. She is survived by her husband Harry Holloway, daughters Donna (Thomas) Holloway, and Cynthia Stevens, & son Eugene(Sharon)Wachowski. Sophie will also be missed by Harry’s children Pam Johnson, Sheri (Jim Missig) Tapert, Sheila (David) Seidensticker, and Mickey Holloway. Many children called Sophie Grandma, and a few will miss growing up hearing stories from their Great Grandma Sophie.
