Background
Nothing made my mom happier than to know that she was of help to someone. Whether she was helping by sharing what she knew, or through acts of service, she was always quick to offer her services. However, I believe her heart felt the strongest pull towards seniors. Some of my earliest memories include being in a car full of my grandmother's friends as my mom drove them around to complete errands they needed done, helping my mom deliver groceries to seniors who were unable to go on their own, or watching as she translated letters to non-English speaking Korean elders. Even as a senior herself, she felt blessed that she was able to drive and take her friends to where they needed to go. She was also active in the senior community here in Howard County and Baltimore, and took advantage of the many senior programs offered by organizations geared towards enriching senior lifestyles. As recent as a month before her passing she expressed a wish to contribute to a local senior organization to help facilitate transportation for seniors who needed it. As such, we'd like to honor her memory by making contributions to the local organizations that helped enrich the last decade of her life. If you would like to help honor her in this way, we would love for you to contribute to this fund in lieu of flowers. Thank you.
제 어머니를 가장 행복하게 만든 것은 누군가에게 도움이 된다는 사실이었습니다. 지식을 나누거나 봉사 활동을 통해 도움을 주는 것이든, 어머니는 항상 빠르게 자신의 도움을 제공하셨습니다. 하지만 어머니의 마음이 가장 강하게 끌린 것은 노인분들이었다고 생각합니다. 제 가장 오래된 기억 중에는 어머니가 할머니의 친구들을 태우고 그들의 심부름을 도와주시던 모습, 혼자 갈 수 없는 노인분들에게 식료품을 배달해 주시던 모습, 또는 영어를 못하시는 한국 노인분들을 위해 편지를 번역해 주시던 모습이 있습니다. 어머니 자신도 노인이 되셨지만, 운전을 할 수 있어 친구들을 필요한 곳에 데려다 줄 수 있다는 것에 감사하셨습니다. 또한 하워드 카운티와 볼티모어의 노인 커뮤니티에서 활발히 활동하셨고, 노인들의 삶의 질을 향상시키기 위한 단체들이 제공하는 다양한 노인 프로그램을 활용하셨습니다. 돌아가시기 한 달 전까지도 도움이 필요한 노인들의 교통편을 지원하기 위해 지역 노인 단체에 기부하고 싶다는 바람을 표현하셨습니다. 그래서 저희는 어머니의 인생 마지막 10년을 풍요롭게 해준 지역 단체들에 기부함으로써 어머니의 기억을 기리고 싶습니다. 여러분도 이런 방식으로 어머니를 기리는 데 동참하고 싶으시다면, 꽃 대신 이 기금에 기부해 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
