Simon Baumer came to the ACLU…

Simon Baumer came to the ACLU with self-trained knowledge about developing. There really wasn't anything he couldn't learn or try. He was innovative and fearless. He had swagger but wasn't cocky. We were in disbelief he only drank Coca Cola when we went out after work -- sounds like he kept that tradition. I was freelancing at WNYC back then and was doing a story on "Guitar Hero." Simon had the videogame at home and offered to show me how it worked. This photo is of him on his sofa in NYC giving Guitar Hero a spin. It didn't make it onto the segment page, which is here, although his stylings may be "B" roll on this segment: https://www.wnyc.org/story/10…. He was like that: what are you working on? How can I help? Have you thought about... ? Gazillion ideas. Endless optimism and joy. He was wonderful to have in the office and to get to know a little outside of the office. Why Hawaii? What NOT?! We called him Simone a lot. He handled it, of course. When I read the news about his passing, my first thought was: not Simon. Not Simon. We all lost a very bright spot in the universe this week. My love, appreciation and deepest sympathies to his family. — with Simon Baumer
