Sid's obituary

It breaks our hearts to announce that Sidney "Sid" Smith, 66, of Bakersfield, CA, passed away unexpectedly on October 4, 2022.

Sid was born on August 9,1956, to Everett and Jane Smith in Bakersfield California. He graduated from Trona High School, and went on to work for Kern McGee. In 1974, he met his first love Jolene Jackson, and they wed in January 1976, going on to have 2 daughters, Faith and Janet.

In 2004, he met Rita Brown and they shared a life together for 18-years. In 2008, Rita's granddaughter Sarah came to live with them. Sid adored Sarah and made sure she was cared for. Sarah was his little shadow.

Sid was a force of nature and was determined to provide for his family's needs. He worked for Kern McGee, worked in the oil fields, drilled offshore, managed a rental property complex, owned a landscaping business, welded for Kern Steel and finally drove a wrecker truck for Barnett's Towing.

In his down time, he loved to ride motorcycles, go camping, take his Jeep into the mountains or across the beach, and had dreams of one day retiring in the Cayucos area.

In 2020, Sid, Rita, and Sarah traveled to Montana to see Sid's daughters. While there, Sid fell in love with the state and was amazed by the majestic Yellowstone National Park, but also the opportunity to have quality time to reconnect with his daughters and his grandkids.

Anyone who knew Sid knew that he was a loving father, husband, papa and friend. He will be remembered as being a great guy, hard working, with a strong sense of integrity, a jokester who cared deeply for his family and those around him. Sid took pride in helping others, always willing to share his time, knowledge and skills whenever he could, often asking for nothing in return.

Sid was preceded in death by his Grandparents Isom and Lona Smith and Jim and Alice Terry, parents Everett and Jane Smith and his brother Rod Smith. He is survived by his two daughters Faith Kinnick and her family, Janet Smith and her family, sisters Pam Mechaley and her family, Lynn Worley and her family, Traci Nelson and her family, and his brother Jim Smith and his family. Girlfriend Rita Brown and her family, Rita’s granddaughter Sarah, as well as a host of beloved uncles, aunts and cousins.

A special thank you to the Bakersfield Police Department, Kern County Sheriff's Office, Bakersfield Fire Department, Barnett's Towing and all of the first responders for the excellent care they provided him in his final hour.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Greenlawn Funeral Home Southwest at 2739 Panama Lane, in Bakersfield, CA 93313 at 2pm. Light refreshments will be available after the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sid Smith Memorial Fund c/o Faith Kinnick at First Interstate Bank, or by Venmo @Janet-Smith-691, or the link https://everloved.com/life-of…
