Sidney (Sid)'s obituary
October 13, 1929 – December 10, 2019
Sidney “Sid” Harr, age 90, went to be with Jesus December 10, 2019 in Encinitas, CA. He was a resident of San Diego, CA and is survived by his wife of 25 years, Victoria “Vicki” Harr, sister, Betty Albert, and daughter, Kaylin Harr. His son, JJ Harr predeceased him.
He had a close circle of committed, wonderful family members although not necessarily related by blood. Over 137 friends and family celebrated his life only a few weeks prior to his promotion to heaven, and he was blessed by hearing how he had influenced each of them personally. Pr. 18:14(b) NKJV says …"there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." Many friends and family fulfilled this scripture in Sid’s life.
Sid was born in Texas, less than two pounds, having only one kidney, and with rickets (a Vitamin D deficiency causing numerous medical issues). The family doctor told his mother to take him home to die. His mother refused this diagnosis, and he began his life fighting against his physical issues. He did not let them deter his life’s purpose and later developed a tenacity for his faith in Jesus without looking back.
Growing up in Galveston, TX, he was baptized at age 38 as a Baptist in 1967. From that date on, his signature greeting was “Do you know Jesus?” He was passionate about everyone knowing Jesus like he did, fulfilling II Tim. 4:5 NKJV which says: "But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you." Sid fulfilled the ministry of an evangelist. Because he was a people-person, he spontaneously initiated telephone calls to see how a person was doing and was sometimes referred to as a one-man care group.
He came to San Diego, CA in 1970. He was a founding member of New Hope Church of Rancho Penasquitos in 1981 where he remained an active member. As sole proprietor of his interior/exterior painting business, he retired at age 81. After retiring, he volunteered for several years during Christmastime as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. Always looking out for the “underdog”, he served at a local ministry called Operation Touch, and a local church food bank, as well as an after-school program for low income and single parent families, washing dishes and staff laundry.
He served 20 years in the Merchant Marines during the Korean War and Vietnam conflict. From 2013-2018, he honored the Merchant Marines, their service and sacrifice by presenting the wreath at the “Wreaths Across America” ceremony each December.
Because Sid’s 90th Birthday party was a beautiful celebration of his life, there will only be a small family memorial to honor Sid’s passing. His favorite song was “I’ll Fly Away”, and he joined the chorus as we all sang it at his party.
In lieu of flowers, you are invited to sponsor a wreath for “Wreaths Across America” at Miramar National Cemetery (to donate, click here: Miramar).
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing." II Tim. 4:7-8 NLT
